Lunch - Grand Ballroom
Limited Capacity seats available

This year we are creating space for fellow birds of a feather — like-minded individuals of a similar background or interest — to mix and mingle during lunch. These Birds of a Feather (BOF) tables are a great way to casually make new connections and talk about shared interests or topics.

Look for signs on select tables with topics such as the ones listed below. If you find a table where there is a blank sign and marker, put up a sign with the topic you’d like to discuss with people.

After creating your sign, just place it in the sign holder on the table (only certain tables will be setup for this), and you’ll be on your way towards chirping about that topic with others.

Sample BOF Topics:
• Women in Technology
• To Cloud or not to Cloud
• Master Schedule Schedulers
• District Decision Makers
• Equity in Education
• Developers Developers Developers

Properly Securing Your SSL Implementation on IIS Server for use with eSP / TAC / HAC / B+ / eFP
Limited Capacity seats available

Do you have your eSP, TAC, or HAC, eFP, or B+ server directly accessible from the Internet?  Do you have an SSL certificate on the server and think that your installation is secure as it can be?  Even if your servers are not directly accessible on the Internet, they are still internally vulnerable. I encourage you to attend my session on Properly Securing Your IIS Server and be sure you have the knowledge and tools necessary to insure that you are offering the safest and most secure access to your sensitive data!  These servers hold a host of mission critical, sensitive data and unfortunately the Microsoft defaults just won't do!  The default, or misconfigured settings could lead to dissemination of sensitive data to unauthorized users.

eSchool - Developing a School of Choice Lottery System in eSchoolPLUS
Limited Capacity seats available

Our district had an elaborate, but intensely manual, process for selecting students for academies and academic programs.  At the time, vendor didn’t offer all the features we needed, such as allowing students to apply for multiple programs of choice within the same building, requiring prerequisites such as recommendation letters, prioritizing student placement based on demographic or academic considerations, as well as permitting administrators to monitor applications and placements in real time.

We realized that with a little creativity and effort, we could actually do all of that using products we already owned, employing skills we already had.  This session will cover high-level aspects of how we created this system by integrating features of Home Access Center, District Defined screens, our reporting tool (Microsoft SSRS), SQL functions and stored procedures, and our mass messaging system.  We will also discuss other ways these technologies and concepts might be used at your district to solve problems.

For those interested in a deeper dive on how to use SSRS in combination with stored procedures, we encourage you to also attend the SNUG session entitled eSchoolPLUS SSRS Advanced Reporting.

Automated Data Error Monitoring in eSchoolPLUS
Limited Capacity filling up

Business rules in eSchoolPLUS are great for stopping simple errors from being entered.  However, error conditions are sometimes too complex to trap at data entry.  St Johns County will be sharing Windows software to allow you to report data entry errors to your building staff and administrators.  Email is used to alert users to errors, which are securely stored in the user’s eSchoolPLUS reports folder.  Errors can be prioritized by color to guide your users on the most important errors to address.  A weekly summary is also available for district administrators, if desired.  Buildings without data errors may also be set to receive customizable congratulatory messages for a job well done.

To use this software you will need the ability to write SQL SELECT statements to detect errors, and (preferably) a spare Windows server where you can access the Task Scheduler to automate the process.  Source code (Visual Studio Basic) as well as executables will be provided for attendees.

Explore what we can do with the tool’s three parts: Administrative Form Setup, Parent/Guardian Data Entry, Registrar Form Handling. Midge Stocker from Evanston Township High School District 202 will demonstrate and describe how EO is used there. This use case will include discussion of user interface enhancements made via a Joint Development Project for EO sponsored by a number of districts in 2015. If you’re using EO already, please come share your experience with this well-integrated system tool. If you’re considering implementing EO, come learn what’s been done elsewhere.

Sample BOF Topics:• Women in Technology• To Cloud or not to Cloud• Master Schedule Schedulers• District Decision Makers• Equity in Education• Developers Developers Developers

Introduction to Cloud Services
Limited Capacity seats available

This session will provide information on SunGard K12 Education's Cloud Solutions Offerings - the SaaS/Application Hosting Service and the Application Backup Service

Customers Using the SaaS/Application Hosting Service are able to run the exact same software as do in-house customers, but with none of the upfront costs or headaches of maintaining a system in-house. This session will be particularly interesting to those organizations that are considering or are in the process of replacing existing hardware. The offering allows you to offload the considerable responsibility and expense of researching, buying, maintaining, and tuning the hardware that runs your SunGard applications and eliminates the need for your staff to maintain the systems.
Customers can take advantage of the Application Backup Service to implement a quick and effective recovery plan for SunGard applications that they run in-house. The Service allows customers to run their SunGard applications on our proven Cloud infrastructure in the event of a disaster affecting in-house systems. The service includes nightly data backups, application code cataloging, and annual system tests to verify the viability of the solution.
